What are the 5 top questions Cirrus owners ask about CAPS overhaul

I recently spoke with the owner of Houston Aviation Center, in Sugar Land, TX (KSGR). They’ve been a Cirrus Authorized Service Center for many years and now they’re also a Certified Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS) Overhaul Center. They began parachute replacement service in August of 2015.

Here are answers to the 5 top questions Cirrus owners ask in their preparation for scheduling a CAPS overhaul.

What are the 5 top questions asked about CAPS repack?

  1. Q&A. “Is CAPS overhaul based on the manufacture date of the airplane?”

No, it’s based on the manufacture date of the CAPS components. Verify the expiration date of the parachute and the rocket motor by referring to the Life Limited Components in the front of the original airframe logbook. Further, the parachute and rocket motor do not necessarily expire at the same time. These items have a 10 year life from the date of manufacture. Your expiration date for these two components may be months apart.

  1. Q&A. “How far in advance do I need to schedule a CAPS repack?”

You should schedule your CAPS repack no less than four (4) weeks before the earliest component expiration date. The minimum lead-time required to receive the necessary parts is (4) weeks. You should plan accordingly to avoid the need for a special flight permit to the CAPS Overhaul Center.

  1. Q&A. “How long will it take for my CAPS overhaul?”

Plan down time of 5-6 business days to complete the CAPS overhaul for G2 and later models. This time could be reduced by several days depending upon shop schedule. If you have a G1 aircraft call for an estimate.

  1. Q&A. “What is the cost at Houston Aviation Center for CAPS overhaul?”

The current CAPS overhaul cost is $16,370.00 and includes parts, labor, shipping and sales tax.  You’ll need to make a deposit of 50% before parts are ordered.

  1. Q&A. “Are there any outlier or unexpected costs with a CAPS overhaul?”

It’s not uncommon that replacement of the #2 batteries is needed because of inadequate voltage to test the new CAPS wiring. Replacing the #2 batteries would cost about $160.00 for parts, labor, shipping and sales tax.

HAC has not seen this issue, but reefing line cutters may need replacement if any damage is noted or if the component is past the Life Limit of 7-years.  If required, replacement cost for line cutters is currently $1,198.00; including parts, shipping and sales tax (no additional labor charge).

Cirrus Aircraft is now in its 10th anniversary of the highest production years so pilots are looking for more information on this topic. You’re welcome to call Houston Aviation Center if you have a question about CAPS repack.
