High-Performance Piston Single-Engine Airplane Market Share Mid-2013

What is the mid-2013 market share for high performance piston single-engine airplanes? Last week I spoke with Jens Hennig, Vice President of Operations, General Aviation Manufacturer Association (GAMA) about piston single-engine shipments in the first half of this year.

My focus here is a comparison of certified 4 seat general aviation planes (not tail wheel or LSA) to their step-up high-performance brethren. From the 2013 GAMA second quarter report I found 302 piston single-engine airplane shipments within that target market segment.

  • Cirrus Aircraft SR20 & SR22 = 130 or 43% market share
  • Cessna 172, 182 & 182T = 84 or 28%
  • Cessna Corvalis 400 TTx = 1 or 0%
  • Diamond DA40 = 46 or 15%
  • Bonanza G36 = 18 or 6%
  • Piper Archer = 23 or 8%
  • Piper Warrior or Arrow = 0 or 0%

Market share is concentrated among pilots seeking 4-5 seat high performance piston single-engine planes (200 hp or more). Through 2nd quarter 2013, only 186 aircraft shipments filled that target segment and Cirrus Aircraft manufactured 130 of those.  From the above numbers, you need to remove 47 shipments of Cessna 172 airplanes 180 hp; cut Diamond DA40 180 hp; and subtract 23 Archers 180 hp.  Here’s the revised target segment of aircraft:

  • Cirrus Aircraft SR20 & SR22 = 130 or 70% market share
  • Cessna 182 & 182T = 37 or 20%
  • Cessna Corvalis 400 TTx = 1 or 0%
  • Bonanza G36 = 18 or 10%

For 2013, Cirrus Aircraft SR22 achieved a 200 lb increase in useful load and they now offer 60/40 flex seating for 5 as a standard feature in both the SR20 and SR22. Since 1999, Cirrus Aircraft has rolled out continuous waves of aviation innovation.

Are new and after-market buying patterns shifting for personal transportation with piston single-engine aircraft? Next week I’ll post market share numbers by manufacturer for piston turbo single-engine shipments.
